About Our Name
Why “Tava”?
As anyone who’s visited Colorado Springs can tell you, Pikes Peak is an amazing sight to behold. The 14,115-foot summit rises over the plains with a sort of ancient majesty. It predates humanity by millions of years, and was here long before anyone first settled the region. For centuries and even millennia, it’s been recognized by people of all cultures as one of the most striking landmarks in Colorado. Everyone has had their own name for it, each trying to capture the beauty and splendor of the peak.
The original inhabitants of the area were the Colorado Mountain Ute people, who’ve inhabited the Front Range region since time immemorial. They saw that, due to its height, the peak was the first to be illuminated by the dawn; for that reason, they named it Tava, meaning “Sun Mountain.”
Who We Are
About the Owners
Tava was created by Brian Cross and David Holman, both veterans and El Paso County, Colorado residents.
Brian Cross
Brian came to Colorado from the northeast to attend the Air Force Academy in the mid 1980’s. He returned in 1997 after flying A-10’s for the Air Force. He has owned and operated multiple businesses over the last 25 or so years and is the president of Tava.
David Holman
Woodworking and architecture have been a passion of his from an early age. After his service in the Colorado National Guard and attending College here in Colorado Springs, He Re-Discovered his favorite childhood pastime while working a summer job building houses. Realizing he couldn’t see himself being this happy in any other career, he dropped out of College to learn the Trade.
After an intense and productive 4 years of framing High-end Custom Homes with the best Home builder in Colorado Springs, Brad Pheif. David set his sights on the next phase of his career, Building His own business. On his 30th birthday he set off on his own as “Dave the Carpenter LLC.”
This began another intense and productive learning experience, during which he met Brian Cross. Brians vast experience of improving and managing successful blue collar businesses synchronized perfectly with his own applied experience providing quality workmanship and enthusiasm for the trades. Thus ‘Tava Custom Decks and Fencing’ was born.
David knows that every project reflects the integrity and ability of its craftsman. For that reason, he takes special care to seek out and train the next generation of carpenters, with the same values that his mentor instilled in him.
In his free time, David enjoys spending time with his Wife and Dog, working in his garden, and exploring Colorado.
